I think that this logo for the Walt Disney company has been very successful. Since the type was based on Disney’s own handwriting, the type is unique and simple, which has allowed it to continue to be used throughout several decades. The curviness and playfulness of the letters represents the company’s themes of youth, happiness, and fun. Since the type is simple and thick, it allows for it to be altered in many ways according to how it will be used and for what product. For example they can change the color of the letters easily or even put illustrations in the letters.
I was actually going to use this as my example, but I did not because I was unsure of it. It does work because it does look almost like a child’s handwriting, but I think it looks too much like handwriting and has become too generic. Disney has evolved and I think their company can update the wordmark or at least add a new one. Disney has a timeless wordmark, don’t get me wrong, I feel like going to Disney World right now and during class in the morning, but I just don’t like the the amount of curves in the wordmark.
When I was looking through famous wordmarks, Disney appeared on the top of every list. I think the reason for this is one because like Zack said this wordmark is timeless, and will forever be effective. But I think another huge reason is because this wordmark appeals to all ages. It is fun and creative for children and teenagers to enjoy but at the same time, adults can associate it as classical as the tyeface appears almost fancy. I believe any person of any age is attracted to this unique typeface, making it one of the most successful wordmarks in the world.
I think that by using his own handwriting, Disney was able to create a very fun, playful and distinctive wordmark. Everyone knows Disney. The wordmark definitely appeals to all ages…it has become an iconic symbol for the youth in all of us. The wordmark is very unique, one of a kind. I love all the curviness that the letters have; it shows that it operates outside of a strict and conformed world. It gives that “Anything can Happen” feel, a sense of magic.
