Blog Post Week 5: Gestalt

This week, we’ll be discussing the principles of gestalt theory. Gestalt is a psychology term which means “unified whole.” It refers to theories of visual perception developed by German psychologists in the 1920s. There are five principles that make up gestalt: similarity, continuation, closure, proximity, figure and ground.

Choose one image below, and pick the principles that best describe it. Explain how the principles influence the image and what the viewer gains from gestalt. You do not have to repost the image, but make sure you tell me which image you are describing!

**You do not have to comment this week**

Blog Post Week 4: Logos

As we move into the identity design project, we are going to look at a lot of logos. You will soon realize, logos are all around us. This week, I want you to post an image of and describe the first logo you see when you wake up in the morning. Have you noticed it before? Is it well done? I’m looking forward to reading what you are awakened to!

*Side note: If someone has already posted the first logo you see, go with your second or third.

In addition to your regular blog post, you will have to post your resume. Please post a JPEG of your resume. (**Make sure it is a JPEG and not a PDF – You can export it to a JPEG file in InDesign.) You are welcome to write a few sentences about the decisions you made and why, but this is not required.

The resume JPEG is due on Friday at 11:59 p.m. with your blog post. You will also have to comment on 2 resumes by Sunday night in addition to your usual comments.

Lab Help

I will be in the lab for extra help this Sunday, February 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. Take this opportunity to get your questions answered before your resumes are due on Tuesday. Look for me in lab 206 E.

Blog Post Week 3: Typography

As you begin to work on your own resumes, it helps to be aware of successful wordmarks around you. This week, please find an example of a wordmark and give 3 reasons why it is successful or unsuccessful.

Remember what we talked about in class: pay attention to type of font, color, word selection, branding, and the overall feel of the mark. Does it convey an essence of the company?  Did they play on the words well?  What could they do differently?

Upload as a JPEG (use the icon next to upload/insert). Here is an in-depth tutorial that explains how to insert an image in your post.

If you have any issues doing this please e-mail me. I am very willing to help, however, there is only so much I can do if you wait until the last minute to post!

Just a reminder: post is due at 11:59 p.m. on Friday (2/4), and 2 comments will be due at 11:59 p.m. Sunday (2/6).

Resume Tips for GRA 217

For this week’s blog assignment, I want you to write about something you read in “Letter,” a chapter of Thinking with Type. I don’t want a summary of the reading; rather, tell me something you learned or never thought about before. Will the information in this chapter change the way you read a dinner menu? Have you ever thought about the evolution of typography? Use the reading as a starting point to your thoughts.

This post is due by Friday, January 28 at 11:59 p.m. Two comments will be due on Sunday, January 30.

If you would like to review the information discussed in my PowerPoint on Thursday, here is a link to the slides!

Blog Presentation

Welcome to Graphics!

Hi all,

As we discussed in class, I’ll be monitoring the course blog. You’ll be responsible for posting something on the blog each week, but I hope you check it out more often! I’ll be posting helpful tips and articles to further enhance your GRA 217 experience! You’ll want to check here each week and look for a post from me to see what your assignment is.

I want to use this week to get you all signed in and make sure you know how to post. You do not have to post comments this week! By SUNDAY night (11:59 p.m.) please post 3 facts about yourself. These can be fun, interesting, or informative.

To get started, I’ll share mine:

  1. I was born in Illinois, but have spent the past 21 years of my life in upstate New York.
  2. I am a big baseball fan. My favorite team is the St. Louis Cardinals.
  3. I love social media. Feel free to follow me on Twitter if that’s something you also enjoy! (@gretchenclare)

I look forward to learning a little more about you this week! Don’t hesitate to e-mail me if you have any questions! gcschroe@syr.edu

Best, Gretchen
