I never thought that I would be writing about text, in fact I never thought that I would be thinking about text.
I think the most interesting thing that I have learned from the reading is the purpose and the art of letters. Every little aspect of each type of type is thought out and has a purpose. The evolution of typefaces is fascinating and before this class and before starting to read this book I never thought about text as an art. I think the most influential and interesting fact about the reading is that text becomes alive. It becomes so much more than just a way to display words on a page, the text in itself becomes its own art.
I got the same sort of reaction. Text can not just be a method for words, but art as well. Looking at text is looking at a meaning, the artistry is a big part of understanding that meaning. The artistry, as you mention, has its own history as well. I think this is important because understanding history evokes more fascinating insight to the text.
I agree in your statement concerning writing about text. I had never thought I would be investing so much energy into styles of text. This really makes me appreciate the importance of presentation. I never actually realized how important the presentation of text is, and how it can impact the reader in so many ways.
I never thought people would have so much passion about fonts. In the 1800’s there were people having serious discussion and revelations about an adaptation of a font or the difference between thick or skinny strokes. It is interesting how we take fonts for granted or accept them at face value.
